Director Statement - Simon Cave

Be Still, My Soul is my first film. Made independently, it grew from a conviction that the dominant perspective on addiction - one that centers the substance over the person - is wrong. The film works through pattern, repetition and echo: formal choices that mirror not only the cycles of dependency but the childhood trauma that addiction so often carries within it. My work is concerned with what the camera can witness when it stays long enough to see clearly.
